After Life: Social Media
As its nature, social media repetitively produce and share images. The deceased are not immune to this modern trend. It seems that their lives transform into visual data by being reproduced and is regarded as one ordinary image every day until someone mentions them. The 49 soap blocks in this work symbolise a period of 49 days human-beings wait for their karma to be judged after death. It is the moment the transition begins to a new mode of existence. According to Korean Buddhist belief, the repeated recitation of the living helps the dead to be reborn in a better world during this period. Video projection on the blocks shows analysed keywords related to death in social media while it turns the symbol of death into different images.
After Life: Social Media was presented at Dead Social, GODÒ galerija, Lithuania 2021.
