Digital images and moving images

Scanned Stuff
I'm scanning things that once were alive in my London flat, mostly because I know their vibrancy will fade away soon and eventually I need to throw them away.
And I reprocess them in 3D software to find the depth in the digital image.
What does it mean to keep them as a digital image? How much of an actual thing I can transfer by digitalising them?
When it comes to a living thing, it feels a bit different from an inorganic substance.
As a substance becomes an image, it must be flattened. It loses its depth.
Can we bring life into it again and give it depth again?
I'm still unsure why what this entire process means.
I'm doing it, to know.
